Of course, I'm madly in love with apps but I think I've tempered the insanity. I like to think I'm choosy about how I drain my battery power.
The way I figure it, some apps are useful. Some are genius. Some are neither. The one that tells me when the bus is coming, down to the second, is useful, but not really genius. It's a bit pedestrian. (Excuse me while I titter at my own pun.) The one that lets me share my contact info with people I schmooze is genius but actually not so useful because I've never met anyone else who has the app. So, if an app is reasonably useful or genius and costs nothing, I'm in.
Just for a larf, I punched in 'archery' to see what came up. There are archery games, where you pretend you're doing archery onscreen. There are ones with timers, tips and terms and - no kidding - one with excuses for your misses. There are also scoring apps. That made me pretty excited. I grabbed one called Archery Score Free.
In practice, a scoring app puts up a picture of a target. You tap on where your arrow went in, and the app tallies your results. Neat. Except I found it a bit clunky, and taking the time to enter where all your arrows went in will direly peeve your friends who are waiting for you to collect your arrows. I, for one, can't actually see that till I get up close to the target. Besides, it's hard to see the screen on a nice sunny day. Big pockets come in handy, as always. It's tricky to pull out arrows with a phone in your hand.
Here's what I wish for: an app where you take a photo of your arrows in the target, and then it magically sorts out what your score is. Indeed, I've gotten that spoiled by this ridiculous 'phone'. Yet, I have every reason to believe this is possible and I darn well expect somebody to make it. Also, I don't want to pay for it. Er...
